A Review on Mario Puzo's The Godfather

The popularity of The Godfather is best appreciated when a reader explores within its pages an up-close and personal look into the workings of power.

Beyond its intriguingly dark and dangerous frills such as murder, violence, and treachery, the meat of the story reveals the brilliance behind unorthodox organisational structures, covert operatives, and the allegiance of men.

Insightful, this work raises one’s appreciation for the virtues of guile and stealth, useful tactics wielded only by men of sophisticated power. Like a game of chess, this book teaches readers how to think beyond the obvious, leading them to understand more clearly that, in any situation, blatant, uncontrolled, and loud displays of force lead to an inevitable death sentence. Whilst exercising a low, underrated profile is a subtlety necessary for those who not only wish to survive but thrive in a world governed by power.

The most admirable insights are embodied by the main character himself, Don Vito Corleone whose endearing sense of self-control and reason are crucial elements in his dealings with men, as well as the symbiosis of favours that fuel his empire.

The Godfather is almost like a sentient mentor talking to the reader indirectly. Through Puzo’s persuasive literary articulation, this almost ‘father-and-son’ relationship between Vito Corleone and his protégés extends to the subconscious mind of the reader. Thus, allowing his principles to reach the core of human understanding that indeed, in order to succeed, one ought to cultivate the gift of reason. Similar to life in general, it is reason that has set man apart from the primordial hunted beasts — without which, the consequence is death.

The author’s style of writing compliments a highly convoluted storyline that requires a keen and well-focused mind. Meticulous, Puzo’s descriptive portrayal of each character allows one to create intelligent inferences to the series of events bound to arise, yet, like bolts of lightning coming out of nowhere, shocking twists and turns continue to keep its reader at the edge of his seat.

A riveting page-turner, this literary classic is indeed difficult to put aside.
